An Interview with London 2019 Finalist Brooke Law

1) To those who might not be familiar with you or your work, could you tell us a little more about you and your music?

I’m about to release my first EP called ARCHETYPES. 

There are 5 singles on the EP each song representing a different female Archetype.

I wanted to challenge the way women’s personalties are stereotyped and judged. The EP demonstrates that women can take on different personality traits, and there are many Archetypes to all women.

2) There's a greater purpose driving The Coffee Music Project. What does Project Waterfall mean to you?

In the UK we’re spoiled with an unnecessary amount of different drinks we can consume. We’re constantly being introduced to a new drink brands of countless flavours and varieties. It also feels like we have a new coffee shop opening on every street corner for people to enjoy a coffee of their choice oblivious to the fact the coffee they are consuming comes from countries in which many of the coffee growing communities have no choice but to travel for miles often sending their children just to find dirty and often contaminated drinking water. This is a daily struggle to survive and without the support from organisations like Project Waterfall families risk disease and or death without access to fresh clean water for drinking and sanitation.

3) When and why did you decide to venture into music?

I loved singing when I was very young and used to go wild when my dad put music on. I’m not great at talking, but writing and singing really allowed me to express myself and feel free.

4) What do you think are the biggest challenges facing emerging musicians?

Living but still being able to do music.

Being an unsigned artist is expensive, gigs are often pay to play and there really isn’t any money in record sales anymore.

I’ve had to do a lot of unrelated jobs and longs hours to pay for everything, which has been really hard. But its been rewarding to know that I can do this on my own.

5) As a musician, what's the best piece of advice you have been given? 

Make your own decisions and surround yourself with people who encourage you and boost your confidence.

6) Name a few of your favourite acts right now.. 

Mø, Billie Eilish, Lewis Capaldi..

7) How did you find writing your London song for this competition?

I’ve chosen to sing a song I wrote my ex partner. We met in Kilburn where we were both studying music.

Both being musicians and having normal ‘london living’ money struggles was also hard on our relationship. We both had big dreams and things we wanted to do together but obviously couldn’t if we didn’t have enough cash. Ultimately being in love and staying together was more important.

8) What should we expect from your set on 1st May?

Passion and honesty. I hope people will be able to relate to my songs.
